Overview

• This is a bespoke itinerary suited for private groups, corporations & charities. Please contact us for a quote. • Mt Toubkal (4167m) is the highest mountain in North Africa and the perfect way to challenge yourself with only a few days away form the UK and most European countries. The trek to the summit is challenging but non-technical and does not require any mountaineering experience but you'll still need to have a decent level of fitness. We drive to Imlil a remote High Atlas village to start the trek, following scree paths and overnighting near Neltner Refuge before attempting our ascent the next day. On a clear day the panoramic views from the summit are fantastic. Enjoy a celebratory dinner at a traditional Berber restaurant in Marrakech on the final evening away with your private group.

Challenge Grade

This expedition involves trekking through undulating country, often untracked, for up to six hours a day at a steady pace. To undertake this level of activity you will need a good level of trekking fitness and be sure-footed. Some days involve walking over rugged terrain, including boulders, scree and heavily vegetated ground. As a minimum, we recommend 45 minutes of aerobic type exercise three times a week for three months leading up to your trek.

Itinerary

After a quick 3.5hr flight to Marrakech you will be greeted by your local guide. The afternoon is free to explore the wonderful sites and smells of Marrakesh. Depending on what time you arrive you may have the opportunity to visit gardens, mosques, palaces, and the souqs of the old Medina and the humming centre of Marrakech: the Djemaa el-Fna. The atmosphere of this square is overwhelming with its jumble of food stalls, snake charmers, fortune and storytellers and the wide variety of people that flock to its attractions. The area is best visited in the evening, when the square really comes alive. Evening welcome dinner and an early night.

After an early breakfast, we leave Marrakech and drive to the small village of Imlil (1740m) in the High Atlas Mountains. Here we meet our trek staff and mules and prepare for our trek. Once we are set to go we will start walking towards the town of Aremd - about one hour away at an altitude of 1904m above sea level. Once we have reached Aremd we will stop for lunch giving us time to enjoy our peaceful surroundings. We continue on, following the mule tracks that guide us through the mountains to the village of Sidi Chamharouch. From here the path becomes slightly steeper as we make our way to Neltner camp (3207m), where we stop for dinner and overnight stay. Along the way there are many chances to stop and enjoy the beautiful mountain scenery.

We will make an early start for our attempt on Mount Toubkal, North Africa’s highest peak. The summit attempt should take about 3-4 hours and the first part will be in the dark to avoid the midday sun and to summit in time for sunrise. First we must traverse long scree slopes; tiring terrain at this altitude and we must proceed slowly to conserve energy. Higher sections are more rocky and there is little vegetation. Once at the summit, the views are spectacular, and although wind and cold conditions mean we will not linger long, we have time to enjoy the scenes of surrounding peaks of the Atlas mountains and down to the plains around Marrakech far in the distance. We then begin the descent back to Neltner camp, where we will have a late lunch and enjoy a well earned rest after a hard days trekking.

Today we descend down the valley back down towards Imlil, and take lunch just outside the village. On arrival in Imlil we bid farewell to our trekking crew and their mules, before driving to Marrakech. Tonight we will celebrate our achievements with a farewell dinner. The rest of the evening is at leisure in Marrakech, where you can return to the Djemma el-Fna to enjoy the atmosphere, or go shopping for some souvenirs in the souqs.
