YP Space helps a Nepalese School

Reaching Everest Base Camp and raising almost $60,000 to support youth homelessness in and around Port Macquarie would seem to be enough of an achievement for one month. However, YP Space MNC Inc with the support of Port City Bowling Club Ltd also spent a day at Mahankal Secondary School in Galfutar, Kathmandu helping repaint and plaster the classrooms.

Claudia Buckby of Port City Bowling Club said “this community day was a perfect way to round out an amazing trip”.
Port City Bowling Club has partnered with YP Space MNC Inc for the past two years to help raise awareness within the local community of youth homelessness and also of the work YP Space MNC Inc does to support kids who find themselves in this position – providing short term crisis accommodation, transitional housing, early intervention and prevention and ongoing support.

Last year they decided to challenge themselves in more ways than one – to get a team to climb to Everest Base camp, while raising much needed funds. Both goals were achieved: 12 people reached Everest Base Camp and almost $60,000 was raised.  Along the way the Port Macquarie & Kempsey local community supported the group and became more aware of the homelessness situation in the local area.

A Nepal school undergoing improvements thanks to charity challengers help
The culmination of this challenge was a day supporting a local school in Kathmandu. Mahankal Secondary School has 476 children from kindergarten to year 12.

At the end of their 14 day hike, the YP space group arrived to help replaster and paint the classrooms.

No one really knew what to expect but it was an incredibly rewarding experience. Despite the fact that it was school holidays, at least 200 kids turned up to help the team.

Not only were the classrooms replastered and painted the YP Space team gained an insight into the local culture and workings of the community.

After sharing lunch together, the children and the YP Space team finished the day with a “dance off” – both teams enjoying the cross cultural experience.

Michelle Ackerman, Operations Manager of YP Space MNC Inc. said: “Reaching Base Camp was a once in a lifetime experience, raising funds for YP Space is a great achievement but the trip would not have been complete without the community day, supporting the local school.”
